Sharing and Syndicating Pages
(NOTE: The ability to copy and share pages is only available on certain SiteOrganic Plans.)
Content syndication allows you to copy and share pages from group to group. Designed with the multi-campus church in mind, this tool is also great for any organization that wants to share information between various departments or groups.
Copying Vs. Syndicating
There is a difference between copying and syndicating a page. When you copy a page, it takes a “snapshot” in time of the body text of a page. Once the content is copied from the "master' page, users can edit the new page without effecting the "master" copy.
When you syndicate a page, you can choose to subscribe to a feed of the "master" page that will automatically update all syndicated pages each time a change is made. Users can edit the "master" page, and any syndicated pages will automatically update with those changes.
Things to Remember
Please review the basic information below before copying or syndicating pages to a group or organization:
- First, remember that you can only copy/syndicate pages among groups within your website. NOTE: You cannot copy or syndicate a page from the Master Group.
- Secondly, if you are a multi-campus church, you can think about the content syndication as a Publisher/Subscriber relationship. The Publisher would be the corporate campus, and the Subscriber would be all of the affiliate campuses and organizations. For clients who are not multi-campus, you can view the relationship the same, you just won’t have a corporate site.
To Allow others to Copy or Syndicate Your Page
To access this feature, you will go through the steps to edit an existing page: Once you have logged into the Admin Console, go to edit site > edit pages > select group and choose your "master" page. If this feature is included in your hosting plan, then you will notice a Copy and Syndicate section at the bottom of the Settings panel.
NOTE: If you don't see the below options on your Page Editor screen, it might mean that this feature is not enabled for your website. Please contact our support team for additional assistance.
You will then need to choose one of the copy or syndicate options listed below.
Copy options:
- No copying allowed: If you do not want to allow copying of the page, select this option.
- Only to other sections within the site: This will allow other groups within your site to copy the page.
- My be copied by other sites: If you are a multi-campus organization, you can select this option in order to copy pages across your various sites. When choosing this option, you can then select which subsidiary organizations are allowed to copy this page.
Syndicate options:
The "feed" from your page is synonymous with syndication. When you syndicate a page, this means that when a user makes a change to the original copy of the page, the change is reflected on all syndicated copies. We liken it to subscribing to a feed that go over multiple campuses or multiple groups. Options two and three for multi-campus churches mean different things.
- No feeds allowed: If you do not want to allow syndicating of the page, select this option.
- Only to other sections within my site: This means that each time this page is syndicated, it will only transfer to the pages in that specific site.
- Feed can be used by any SiteOrganic site that is an affiliate of this one: If you are a multi-campus organization, this means that the page content can be syndicated across your various sites. When choosing this option, an soSyndicate tag will appear which will need to be placed in the body section of your target (syndicated) pages.
One final piece of information to keep in mind is that all links and image paths in the page editor must be fully qualified. This means that instead of the usual shortened URL (ex. /pages/page.asp?page_id=15709), the URL should be the entire link: http://www.examplechurch.com/pages/page.asp?page_id=15709. This will help to ensure that remote sites can still make copies of your content and view everything intact.
