Friendly URLs
All SiteOrganic pages, by default, have a page ID. When first created, the page address will appear something like this:
http://www.mywebsite.com/pages/page.asp?page_id=12345
The friendly URL tool allows you to create a shorter, more memorable address for your pages. Once a friendly URL has been created, you can still view the page at its regular page ID (like the one above), or you can use a Friendly URL like this:
http://www.mywebsite.com/contact
Check out the video below for instructions, or jump down below for further information:
To create your friendly URL:
- Open your page in the admin console (edit site > edit pages > select group) and go to the friendly URL panel (in the Page Editor area)..
- Type in the text of your friendly URL. Please keep in mind a few guidelines:
- May not contain spaces
- Must only have the following character types: A-Z, a-z, 0-9, or - (hyphen)
- Must be unique (i.e. cannot duplicate another Friendly URL elsewhere on the same Website).
- If you have multiple domain names pointing to your Website (e.g. mywebsite.com, mywebsite.org, mywebsite.net), a single Friendly URL will work for all of them. It is not necessary to set up a separate Friendly URL for each domain.
- Friendly URLs cannot be used on Feedback Form pages.
- Friendly URLs cannot be used to point to external addresses (i.e. they can only point to pages on your own Website).
- Friendly URLs cannot be used to point to files or documents (only pages). If you want to point to a document, then put a link to that document on a page, and then create your Friendly URL on the page itself.
- Click the "Add" button. You will see your URL appear in the list below.
You can setup more than one friendly URL per page. After you have created a friendly URL, you can test it immediately by typing or pasting the address into a Web browser. You can create more than one friendly URL per page.
If you are an Administrator, you can also setup friendly URLs under site administration > friendly URLs. From here you will enter the friendly URL name and then just the pages portion of your page URL in the target field (i.e. pages/page.asp?page_id=12345). This is the page your friendly URL will point to.
